We raise Gala, Honeycrisp, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, and Fuji apples.
Gala harvest typically starts the end of August, Honeycrisp around Labor Day, Red Delicious middle of September - followed by Golden Delicious and Granny Smith. We finish up with Fuji harvest in October.
Basin City is a great place to raise apples because of the abundant irrigation and a climate that allows premium apples to size well and finish off with plenty of color and sweetness.
Fruit is normally packed and sold through warehouses in the Yakima Valley.
The season never really ends in an apple orchard. As soon as the last apple is picked, pruning begins for next years crop. Pruning lasts through the winter months before blossom time. After the fruit crop is set, thinning begins by removing the unwanted fruits and to allow the best fruit to grow and become premium fruit for the consumer. Normally thinning finishes up on the later varieties just in time to begin harvest on the earlier varieties. And then the cycle continues after the last apple is safely stored away.
